FEAR

I long for that quickening of the blood. How light my limbs become; what a wonder my steps are, so filled with air. If I could choose any companion, it would be Fear. My senses remain sharp, focused on the instant like a hawk’s narrow gaze.

When others would prefer to remain little more than lumps of dry wood, senseless, feeling nothing but the dull monotony of health, I would rather thrill at the inevitable shock of heart, blood, and muscle drawn tight. For a time, I lost track of Fear. Bliss, love, and companionship all but scoured it from my long-bruised souls. To forget Fear is to forget life; the longer one exists without it, the more terrible its touch when at last it reappears.

How precious and terrible. The tragedy is that we can escape for those few precious moments. To believe ourselves happy, safe, and beyond danger is incredibly blissful. How shortsighted we are to wrap ourselves in the artful lie of security. In the end, a lover’s smile is empty, his embrace but a phantom. Savor that moment of happiness, for it is fleeting, and never so achingly precious as when it has vanished into memory.

Yes, being an insensitive lump of dry wood is comforting, but in the end, the licking flames will always find you. Lovers die. Worlds collapse. Bodies age.

Revel in your moments of joy and love.

They are but a blink of the eye.

Fear—though held at bay for those scant heartbeats—cannot be denied. It will consume your flesh and souls. Scream while it devours you, for once again, you are truly alive!
